The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program helps participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.

The purpose of the instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission courses and/or modules. Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Junior Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management, Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Basic Water Rescue.

This program is designed to teach individuals how to deal with emergency situations by using first aid skills in a delayed-help environment. Our NICA-specific First Aid Class highlights the most pertinent parts of the Red Cross Wilderness First Aid class as they apply to mountain biking. The Wilderness and Remote First Aid program is appropriate for audiences from youth-serving organizations as well as adults who participate in outdoor recreational activities or who work in wilderness or remote settings where emergency medical services (EMS) response is more than 1 hour away.
* CPR is a prerequisite to taking the NICA First Aid Course. Students must possess and show proof of a current CPR card to attend the NICA First Aid Course.
