This is a combination course – successful completion of which will result in a renewed Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor certification from The American Red Cross. Please review course descriptions and prerequisites below.
The Lifeguard Instructor/Instructor Trainer review course is an abbreviated recertification course for currently certified instructors and instructor trainers. The purpose of the course is to allow participants to review the Lifeguard Instructor course content, practice skills in a formal class setting, and complete the final written exam.
*Prerequisites:
Possess a current (r.2017) American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification and/or
Possess a current (r.2017) American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certification
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.
*Prerequisites:
- Age 15 or older on or before last day of class
- Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing:
- 100 yards front crawl/freestyle
- 100 yards breaststroke
- 100 yards choice of front crawl/freestyle OR breaststroke
- *this is untimed
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
- Complete the following timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards
- Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
- Surface and swim 20 yards on back with both hands holding object
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps
